Summer Sun Safety

Enjoying the summer sun safely is all about protecting yourself from harmful UV rays while still having a great time outdoors.

Here are some top tips to stay safe in the sun:

1. Use Sunscreen

SPF 30 or higher: Use a broad-spectrum sunscreen with an SPF of 30 or higher.

Apply generously: Apply sunscreen 15-30 minutes before going outside and reapply every two hours, or more often if swimming or sweating.

Don’t forget areas: Cover all exposed skin, including ears, neck, and the tops of feet.

2. Wear Protective Clothing

Lightweight and long-sleeved: Wear lightweight, long-sleeved shirts and pants.

Wide-brimmed hat: Protect your face, neck, and ears with a wide-brimmed hat.

Sunglasses: Wear sunglasses that block 100% of UVA and UVB rays.

3. Seek Shade

Avoid peak hours: Stay out of the sun between 10 AM and 4 PM, when UV rays are strongest.

Check daily UV index: Be aware of the UV index in your area, which indicates the strength of the sun’s UV rays.

Plan activities accordingly: Plan outdoor activities when the UV index is lower.

7. Protect Children and Pets

Children’s skin: Children’s skin is more sensitive, so apply sunscreen and protective clothing to them.

Pet care: Ensure pets have access to shade and plenty of water; some pets may need sunscreen on exposed skin.

8. Recognize Sunburn Risks

Fair skin and medications: Fair-skinned individuals and those taking certain medications (like antibiotics or acne treatments) may be more prone to sunburn.

Act quickly: If you get sunburned, get out of the sun, cool the skin with damp cloths, and hydrate.

9. Be Aware of Heat-Related Illnesses

Symptoms to watch for: Know the signs of heat exhaustion and heatstroke, such as dizziness, nausea, headache, and rapid pulse.

Cool down: If you or someone else shows symptoms, move to a cool place, hydrate, and seek medical help if necessary.

Balance and moderation: Balance your time in the sun with time in the shade and take regular breaks to cool off.

Fun activities: Engage in fun summer activities like swimming, hiking, and picnicking, while keeping safety in mind.
